Following the attack on a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) delegation, which was on its way to visit a school in Jaipur on August 21, cross FIRs have been lodged by both sides with CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and “50-60” CJP workers being booked under the SC/ST Act.

Meanwhile, 11 persons were detained by Jodhpur Police after they allegedly entered the Gandhi Shanti Pratishthan where Ranka was addressing a seminar on Sunday afternoon. Chanting “Jai Shri Ram” and “Cockroach Go Back”, they allegedly hit one person outside the building where Ranka was speaking before police and others intervened.

In Jaipur, the FIR against CJP co-convener and Ranka was lodged on a complaint by Bhagwan Sahay Dhanka, a resident of Rampura Kanwarpura village, who said that on Friday, “At around 9am, Ashutosh Ranka of CJP came to our village with 50-60 people on the pretext of inspecting a school. They started abusing me and the villagers. They also used abusive language against the women of our village; when the villagers and I tried to reason with them, they started beating us.”

‘Abused us with casteist words’

Claiming that he and other villagers were injured in the attack, Dhanka said, “They insulted me and other villagers by abusing us with casteist words. There is tremendous anger among the villagers due to the incident.”

The FIR against CJP workers has been lodged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections for voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, along with three sections of the SC/ST Act.

The other FIR has been lodged on a complaint submitted by CJP worker Rekha Sharma. She said, “We are inspecting schools across the country under the CJP’s ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign. We received information that in Rampura Kanwarpura, the government school is being run in a buffalo shed and decided to go there.”

‘Attacked from all directions’

The complaint said, “The CJP team led by Ashutosh Ranka reached the village but our vehicles were stopped at the village border, away from the school, and we started going by foot. We saw that at some distance before the school, some anti-social elements were abusing… We repeatedly requested them to listen to us, that we have only come to inspect the school on the invitation of villagers themselves but our team was attacked from all directions with bricks, sticks, and tubes filled with stones.”

She said, “Four-five goons surrounded each of our workers and assaulted them brutally with the intent of fatality.”

Listing the injuries, the complaint said that volunteer Surendra alias Sanju Verma was brutally assaulted, leaving him with a fractured hand and a serious injury. Another volunteer, Salman, was surrounded and brutally beaten by a group, leaving him with serious injuries all over his body, it added.

“Dust was thrown into Rekha Sharma’s eyes and she was attacked, shoved, and beaten from all sides. She suffered a serious injury to her shoulder,” the CJP said.

CJP has said that videos of the assault are available with the media and claimed that the person who orchestrated the attack is Lalchand Sharma, who is also seen assaulting on camera.

“The villagers who came to rescue us claimed that Kamal Pradhan and Shankar Bagda had planned the assault,” they said. Pointing out that several persons are “clearly visible” in the videos, the CJP said they should be identified and legal action should be taken against them. The CJP said that vehicles of their delegation were also attacked.

On Sunday, Ranka visited Sanju, an advocate, in the hospital. He said Sanju “comes from a poor Dalit family.”

This FIR from the CJP’s side has been lodged under provisions of voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly, mischief causing loss or damage to the amount of Rs 20,000 to 1 lakh, and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.

Both the FIRs have been lodged at Shivdaspura police station under Jaipur City (South).

Meanwhile, in Jodhpur, Ranka addressed a seminar titled ‘Shiksha: Nayi peerhi ke sawal’ or ‘Education: questions by the new generation’. DCP Jodhpur City (East) Manish Kumar Choudhary said that 11 persons have been detained in the case (attack outside the event premises) but no complaint has been filed yet.

While some reports claimed that the 11 are affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the DCP said that no formal association with either outfit has been established yet.
