2 killed, 5 injured after Ganpati idol collapses during procession in Mumbai

Two people were killed and five others, including two children, were injured after a portion of a 22-foot Ganpati idol collapsed during a procession in South Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area late Saturday night.
The incident occurred around 9.51 pm at the famous Bhuleshwar-cha-Raja Ganpati mandal at Jay Ambe Chowk, just 50 metres away from its destination in Fanas Wadi, Marine Lines. The Plaster of Paris (PoP) idol was being transported from a workshop in Byculla when a portion of it broke off and fell onto bystanders.
The dead were identified as Sanket Nevshe, 33, the president of the mandal, and Brijesh Hemant Joshi, 30.

“The collapsed portion fell directly on one person’s head and hit another on the shoulder. The remaining victims were hurt as the heavy structure landed on them,” a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) disaster management official told .

All seven victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities, including Reliance Hospital, GT Hospital, and JJ Hospital. Nevshe and Joshi were declared dead at the hospital.
The five injured, identified as Vaibhav Ghenand, 38, Pawan Chaurasiya, 25, Kunal Kashid,26, Lavanya Ganer, 5, and Divya Ganer, 7, are currently undergoing treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
The LT Marg police said they have filed an accidental death report and will take further legal action when the post-mortem analysis is complete.
