Navi Mumbai :- In an effort to promote eco-friendly practices and reduce environmental pollution during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced well-organized plans for the immersion of Lord Ganesha idols. This initiative, known as “Shri Ganeshotsav 2023,” aims to create a positive environmental impact and has received commendation from various quarters.
Mr. Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner of NMMC, extended an invitation to the citizens to enthusiastically participate in the eco-friendly celebration of Shri Ganeshotsav 2023. As part of this initiative, the NMMC has made provisions for the immersion of Ganesha idols in 22 natural immersion sites and has constructed 141 artificial immersion ponds across various departments. This comprehensive approach not only ensures the convenience of citizens but also plays a crucial role in reducing crowd congestion and water pollution.
In line with the directives of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Eknath Shinde, the NMMC has waived any fees for erecting pandals (temporary structures) during the festival. This decision aims to encourage Ganesh Utsav mandals (organizing committees) to create vibrant and environmentally responsible celebrations.
To streamline the process, the NMMC introduced an online facility for applying for pandal permits. Special offices were set up in each department to facilitate the permit process, resulting in 185 Ganesh Utsav mandals receiving approval. Notably, the distribution of permits is as follows: Belapur – 28, Nerul – 24, Vashi – 17, Turbhe – 21, Koparkhairane – 48, Ghansoli – 10, Airoli – 27, and Digha – 10.
Last year’s introduction of artificial immersion ponds received a positive response from the citizens of Navi Mumbai. In response to public demand, the NMMC has constructed seven additional artificial immersion ponds this year. This expansion reflects the community’s commitment to raising awareness about environmental issues and curbing water pollution.
Under the “Majhi Vasundhara” campaign by the Maharashtra government, Navi Mumbai has been recognized as the state’s top environmentally conscious city in the “A” category of municipal corporations. This recognition reflects the dedication and awareness of Navi Mumbai citizens towards environmental conservation.
Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar emphasized the significance of eco-friendly celebrations, stating that they not only facilitate a smoother immersion process but also contribute to reducing water pollution. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with the broader goal of preserving the environment.
To ensure the smooth execution of Ganeshotsav, all municipal departments, as well as the police department and the M.S.E.D.C.L, are coordinating their efforts. This collaborative approach includes setting up CCTV cameras, providing backup power, and deploying medical teams at 22 immersion sites.
Furthermore, 163 immersion sites, including 22 natural and 141 artificial ponds, will be manned by volunteers. Each immersion site will have a dedicated medical center nearby to address any emergencies, and lifeguards will also be present to ensure safety. Additionally, the NMMC encourages citizens to use eco-friendly materials for idols and has designated areas for the eco-friendly disposal of floral decorations.
In conclusion, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s well-structured plan for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in 2023 underscores the commitment of the city and its citizens to environmental preservation. By embracing eco-friendly practices and providing efficient infrastructure, NMMC aims to make this year’s Ganeshotsav not only memorable but also environmentally responsible.
