Vasai-Virar :- In a remarkable display of environmental consciousness, the citizens of Vasai-Virar bid adieu to 8,981 Lord Ganesha idols by immersing them in artificial ponds, contributing to the city’s efforts to promote eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. On Wednesday, a total of 14,169 idols were immersed in the city, with 8,981 of them finding their way into the artificial ponds.
After their immersion in these artificial ponds, the idols were further processed and eventually immersed in natural bodies of water, adhering to proper procedures. Notably, citizens had given priority to clay idols, contributing to the preservation of the environment.
The municipal corporation has been tirelessly working towards the conservation of the environment during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, and this year is no exception. The “Eco Ganesh 2023” initiative was introduced, involving the use of eco-friendly clay idols and artificial ponds. The Municipal Commissioner, Anilkumar Pawar, emphasized the significance of this initiative, which has been planned meticulously over the past months and involved public awareness campaigns.
In Vasai-Virar, the two-day Ganesh idol immersion process concluded smoothly. Of the total idols immersed, 8,937 were immersed in artificial ponds, while 44 public idols were immersed. Comparing to the previous year, there has been a notable increase in the number of idols immersed in artificial ponds, contributing to the reduction of pollution in natural water bodies.
The use of artificial ponds for immersion has become a tradition in Vasai-Virar for the past two years. Last year, 64% of plaster-of-Paris idols were immersed in these ponds. The municipal corporation had strategically placed 105 artificial ponds across 58 locations in the city, ensuring easy access for citizens. Moreover, arrangements were made to provide aarti facilities at these ponds for devotees.
The municipal corporation left no stone unturned in its preparations. All necessary infrastructure, including mandaps, restrooms, and lighting, was set up at each artificial pond and immersion site. The efforts of municipal officials, employees, and volunteers were integral in ensuring the smooth execution of the immersion process.
Thanks to the comprehensive and well-organized efforts of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation, no water bodies were adversely affected, and citizens could immerse their idols conveniently at artificial ponds. The immersion process will continue, with the idols from the artificial ponds set to undergo further processing before being immersed in the sea.
In conclusion, Vasai-Virar’s commitment to eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations through initiatives like “Eco Ganesh 2023” has not only preserved the environment but also set an inspiring example for other regions to follow. The use of artificial ponds and responsible idol immersion practices are crucial steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.
