Vasai-Virar, Maharashtra:– In Vasai-Virar city, the five-day Ganesh and Gauri idol immersion concluded on Saturday with great enthusiasm and a spiritually charged atmosphere. A total of 14,004 Ganesh idols were immersed in the city. What stood out was the citizens’ preference for artificial ponds, as 8,611 idols found their way into these eco-friendly reservoirs. This represents a significant 62% of the total immersions, thanks to the city’s municipal corporation’s concerted efforts.
Under the ‘Eco Ganeshotsav 2023’ initiative by Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, citizens warmly embraced environmentally conscious Ganeshotsav celebrations. The residents have shown a strong commitment to eco-friendly festivities, and their overwhelming response has been commendable. Immersions began on Saturday afternoon, culminating in the immersion of 14,004 Ganesh and Gauri idols. Notably, 8,393 of these idols were immersed in artificial ponds, while 393 idols found their way into natural ponds and the Arabian Sea. The immersion process started early in the morning.
Artificial Ponds Gain Popularity
The municipal corporation’s initiative to create artificial ponds for idol immersion has gained traction among the citizens. Out of a total of 14,004 immersions, a significant 62% chose to immerse their idols in these eco-friendly artificial ponds. To facilitate this, the corporation had set up 52 designated locations with 105 artificial ponds. This proactive approach has resulted in an increase in artificial pond immersions compared to the previous year when 4,824 idols were immersed in them. It’s worth noting that Vasai-Virar now leads other municipalities in the Mumbai metropolitan region in terms of artificial pond immersions.
Efficient Municipal Management
Each immersion site was equipped with a dedicated pandal for devotees to perform rituals, and proper sanitation facilities were provided. Additionally, the immersion routes were well-maintained. Municipal employees and volunteers diligently ensured that the process was smooth and orderly. As a result, there were no reports of any untoward incidents or environmental damage.
Proper Disposal in Artificial Ponds
The idols immersed in artificial ponds were later retrieved, and the clay was processed for further use. This initiative aims to reduce pollution and promote the sustainable use of resources. The Vasai-Virar Municipal Commissioner, Anilkumar Pawar, along with other officials, oversaw the entire immersion process, ensuring that it was carried out efficiently.
